How do I use Mounjaro or Wegovy safely and correctly?

Step-by-step guidance on using your weekly injection safely and effectively

This guide explains how to correctly use Mounjaro and Wegovy, including preparation, injection steps, and important safety advice. Always follow the instructions provided by your clinician alongside this guide.

What these treatments are used for

Mounjaro and Ozempic are injectable medications typically prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes and, in some cases, weight management. They are taken once weekly and work by helping regulate blood sugar levels and appetite.

Before you start

Before using your injection:

  • Read the instructions provided with your medication
  • Check the pen is not damaged and the liquid is clear
  • Wash your hands thoroughly
  • Ensure you are using the correct dose as prescribed

How to take your weekly injection

Step 1: Choose your day

Pick a consistent day each week. You can take your injection at any time of day, with or without food.

Step 2: Prepare your pen

  • For multi-use pens (such as Ozempic), attach a new needle before each use
  • Check the solution is clear and free from particles

Step 3: Choose your injection site

Inject under the skin (subcutaneous injection) in one of the following areas:

  • Abdomen (stomach)(except for a 2-inch radius around your belly button).
  • Thigh (upper outer thigh).
  • Upper arm (if someone else is administering the injection)

Rotate your injection site each week to reduce irritation.

Step 4: Administer the injection

  • Clean the area with an alcohol swab
  • Insert the needle at a 90-degree angle
  • Press and hold the injection button
  • Wait a few seconds before removing the needle

Step 5: Dispose and store safely

  • Remove the needle and dispose of it in a sharps container
  • Store your pen as instructed (usually refrigerated before first use)

Important safety information

  • Do not share your injection pen with anyone
  • Always use a new needle for each injection (if applicable)
  • Stay hydrated, especially if experiencing gastrointestinal side effects
  • Contact a healthcare professional if you experience:
    • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
    • Ongoing vomiting
    • Signs of an allergic reaction
