How do I use Mounjaro, Wegovy & Foundayo safely and correctly?
Step-by-step guidance on using your weekly injection safely and effectively
Patient Guide: How to Take Your Medication
Injectable Pens & Oral Tablets (Mounjaro® | Wegovy® | Foundayo®)
This guide covers how to correctly take your prescribed weight-management treatment, whether you have been prescribed weekly injectable pens or daily oral tablets.
Always follow the instructions provided by your clinician alongside the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) inside your medication box.
Part 1: Oral Tablets (Daily Dosing)
Wegovy® Tablets / Foundayo® Tablets
Oral GLP-1 tablets have strict absorption requirements. To ensure the active medication is absorbed properly into your bloodstream, you must follow these rules every morning.
1. Take First Thing in the Morning on an Empty Stomach
-
Take your tablet immediately upon waking up.
-
Your stomach must be completely empty (having had nothing to eat or drink overnight).
2. Take With a Small Sip of Plain Water Only
-
Swallow the tablet whole with a small sip of plain water (no more than 100–120 ml / half a standard glass).
-
Do not use coffee, tea, juice, milk, or flavoured water, as these prevent absorption.
-
Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet.
3. Wait at Least 30 Minutes Before Eating or Drinking
-
Wait at least 30 minutes before having your first meal, coffee, tea, or any other beverage.
-
Wait at least 30 minutes before taking any other oral medications or supplements.
-
Eating, drinking more than a sip of water, or taking other tablets before 30 minutes have passed will significantly reduce how much medication your body absorbs.
Part 2: Injectable Pens (Once-Weekly Dosing)
Mounjaro® | Wegovy® | Foundayo® Pens
Injectable treatments are administered once per week as a subcutaneous injection (into the fatty layer directly beneath the skin).
Step 1: Schedule Your Injection Day
-
Choose a consistent day each week.
-
Unlike tablets, injections can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.
Step 2: Prepare Your Pen & Needle
-
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
-
Check the medication: The liquid must be clear and colourless (or slightly pale yellow). Do not use if cloudy, discoloured, or containing particles.
-
Attach a fresh, sterile needle: Peel off the seal, push straight onto the pen, and twist clockwise until secure. Remove both outer and inner needle caps.
-
Dial your prescribed dose on the dose selector.
Step 3: Choose & Rotate Your Injection Site
Inject under the skin in one of three approved areas:
-
Abdomen (Stomach): At least 2 inches (5 cm) away from your navel.
-
Thigh: Front or outer aspect of the upper thigh.
-
Upper Arm: Outer back of the upper arm (recommended only if someone else is administering it for you).
-
Rotate your site weekly to avoid skin thickening or irritation.
Step 4: Administer the Injection
-
Clean the area with an alcohol wipe and allow it to dry.
-
Insert the needle straight into the skin at a 90-degree angle.
-
Press the dose button all the way down until the counter resets to 0.
-
Hold the button and needle firmly in place for 5 to 10 seconds before removing to ensure the full dose is absorbed.
Step 5: Safe Disposal & Storage
-
Carefully shield and unscrew the used needle. Immediately discard it into your yellow sharps bin. Never throw needles into general household rubbish.
-
Replace the pen cap to protect from light.
-
Storage: Keep unopened pens refrigerated (2°C – 8°C). Do not freeze. In-use pens can be kept at controlled room temperature (below 30°C) or in the fridge according to brand packaging guidelines.
Important Safety & Clinical Advice
-
Hydration: GLP-1 medications can reduce thirst signals. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially if experiencing mild nausea or indigestion.
-
Never Share Pens: Pens and needles are strictly for personal use.
-
Missed Doses:
-
Tablets: If you forget a morning tablet, skip that day’s dose entirely and take your regular tablet the next morning. Never take two tablets on the same day.
-
Injections: If you miss a dose by fewer than 4–5 days, take it as soon as you remember. If more time has elapsed, skip the missed dose and resume on your regular scheduled day.
-
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Contact a doctor, call 111, or attend urgent care immediately if you experience:
-
Severe, persistent stomach pain radiating to your back (with or without vomiting), which may indicate pancreatitis.
-
Signs of an allergic reaction: Swelling of the lips, face, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing or swallowing; severe hives.
-
Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea that prevents you from keeping fluids down.
